Sunday, June 14, 2015 Regensburg

We docked in Regensburg about 5:30 this morning. We went back to sleep and got up about 7:30. We had breakfast on our own and joined the included tour at 9. This tour leader knew her stuff, but was not quite as good as Fiona in Nuremberg. Fiona kept up a steady chatter of information the whole time we were walking and driving. This young lady was silent at times.

Unfortunately, the signature attraction, a stone bridge across the Danube built from 1135 to 1146 AD, was under repair and covered in shrouds. You could still walk across on a temporary structure, but could not see much of the original. After the tour we walked around for a while, grabbed a bratwurst from an iconic sausage house, and returned to the ship for lunch. We again met our new buddies and were later joined by another couple from Maryland.

Here is the captain's cab of the ship up on the sundeck. Notice that all the railings are laying down. They were removed to pass under some particularly low bridges and were in the process of being reinstalled.

We visited a museum/interpretive centre in Regensburg and Celeste took this quiz. She often uses my name in case the results are embarrassing, but the joke was on her this time as she finished on top of the list.

We went back to our room, planning to go back out, but Celeste was looking things up on the internet and I fell asleep so she had a nap too. We finally got away about 3:30, toured around some more, grabbed another bratwurst (The first one was so good!), and returned to the ship about 6. We had dinner with the same crew as the first night and won the “Last one to leave, turn out the lights” distinction. I am sure that the staff was glad to see us go so they could finish cleaning up. We were several minutes late for a 9 PM performance of operatic singing and classical music, but did not last long anyway. We were back in our room before 10 and went to bed about 10:30, just as we were casting off for another overnight transit.

Weather was mostly sunny, about 80 F or 27 C.
