Saturday, August 2 – Revelstoke to Calgary
We have had great sunny and warm weather ever since we left
home until today. This morning was overcast with mid-level cloud. It thinned out during the day, although we got
one little rain shower, and we eventually got some sunny breaks.
We got away just after 9 and reached the western outskirts
of Calgary at 2:30 Calgary time (one hour later than BC). We did not have
enough gas to make it to Alberta, so we had to pick up some of that extra
special, premium priced BC gas in Golden. In Calgary we stopped at a couple of
liquor stores to fill Carla’s shopping list. Then we went to the east end
Costco near our hotel to see if they had the Kirkland beer sampler and a gas
station, but struck out on both counts. We reached the hotel at 4 and found
another Costco on the Internet that had beer and gas, but, with the Rider game
starting at 5, we felt that we did not have time. They close at 6 and won’t be
open tomorrow when we leave, so, maybe another time.
Trail mix and Cheezies for supper. Mmmmmmm…!
I have noticed that traffic moves much better than it did in
the old days. I attribute it to two things: first, there are way more passing
lanes and four-lane sections, and second, almost all the camper trailers are
being pulled by powerful pickup trucks rather than cars, as in the past.
We noticed a lot of long weekend traffic again today, this
time heading east to west. The road heading west was often crowded and there
was a long line-up at the entrance to Banff National Park. Yesterday there was
a line-up of at least two or three miles of traffic crawling into Sicamous.
